Hi,

I have an employee who started mid-May. She hadn't received her P45 from her previous employer, so I put her through on a P46, option B, and sumbitted this online.

She at last passed me her P45 this month, so I updated her entry in 12Pay to record the P45 details as per http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/p45-new-employee.htm#4. It all looks to have worked correctly with regards to her tax for August pay.

I assumed that I would need to submit the P45 online, but it is not showing up under Internet Movements, even when I advance the month. Would you expect it to show up, or is it not necessary to submit a P45 after a P46?

Hello Niall, The software doesn't permit two different startup document submissions for the same employee. So, in this rare situation, you cannot file the P45 online. I'm afraid you'll just have to stick it in an envelope...

It does reveal an issue, which is that we'll have to have a way of handling this once online filing of startup and leaver documents becomes mandatory.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I'll submit it manually.

Sorry to re-open an old post, but I've encountered this siutation again.

I had to submit a P46 for a new enployee for September pay. He has now given me his P45 from his previous employer, which I have entered into 12Pay. But the P45 doesn't show up under Internet Movements. Do I still have to submit the P45 via the File Returns and Forms section of the HMRC Online services website?

I managed to answer my own question. In another post, I saw the following:

Go to the employee's personal tab, and holding down both the "Alt" and "Shift" keys on the keyboard click on the word "Exclude" that you can see in the HMRC starter/leaver ID near the bottom of the form. The word "Exclude" should disappear if you get it right, and you'll then find that you can file the employee with HMRC.

Using this, I was able to submit the P45.
