Hi,

Getting "Credentials Failure" on Internet submission of P45s.

Was wondering - what are the REQUIRED fields for the submission of a P45? Name, DoB for sure, but what are the others please? Leaving date? Country? Address lines 1-4?

Many thanks if you can provide this.

"Credentials" doesn't relate to your P45 data, it relates to the data that you're using to login to the gateway.

4 things need to be correct:

  • HMRC gateway login (usually 12 digits, sometimes 12 digits mixed with letters)
  • HMRC gateway password (case sensitive, a maximum of 12 characters)
  • Tax office (a 3 digit number)
  • Tax reference (a mixture of letters and numbers, usually between about 3-8 characters)

If any of those are wrong you'll fail to submit with a "credentials" error. We've been told many, many times that people are entering correct credentials into our software but HMRC are rejecting them. That has never once been correct; the credentials invariably turn out to be wrong when we examine them (sometimes people have got quite huffy about this issue!)

Thanks for the clarification. With an absolute promise not to be huffy , I have checked all 4 of the credential variables you have listed and I'm as positive as I can be (without being huffy) that they are correct and work fine on the HMRC Gateway website.

Is there any possible connection between my failed P45 submissions and the potential "cracks" you suggest in the pinned thread at the top of this forum?

The pinned thread relates to an incident last year where HMRC was accepting P35/P14 submissions for a few hours without acknowledging their success. Then everyone got their success notices all at once later on. We'll unpin it (if we can work out how to) because it is no longer relevant.

In the payroll reports folder (Reports/Reportfolder) there is a file called "inyearmovements yymmdd hhmmss.xml" (ie with the date and time it was created. If you email that to us we'll check why it is being rejected.

Thanks for your patience, Jane

In this case the password being entered was more than 12 characters. There is a bug in the internet gateway which ignores the extra characters, but the 3rd party HMRC gateway that software like ours files into doesn't... We can't limit the number of characters in our software because these limits are subject to change.

Hopefully that sorts it out. EDIT: (And indeed we later got a nice message from our customer saying the the problem is now solved)
