Hi,

Hope i've put this query in the right place.

I've just recieved a p6 from HMRC for a part time employee changing her from tax code 207T back to BR. Her next wage now shows as a minus as lots of tax is taken. is this correct? i had always thought when a tax code changes it was from that point on and didnt affect any previos tax paid during the year... I'm most probably wrong. but can someone please clarify the situation as i am sure to get asked when i hand out a 'bill' instead of a payslip next week.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Assuming that the tax code on the P6 wasn't specified as a W1/M1 tax code then the treatment here is absolutely correct. The employee owes tax that exceeds their gross pay this week.

The easiest "fix" is for you to lend them the money until next week. You can do that by entering a one off payment on the employee's current period tab using "Add Payment/Deduction" and selecting "Staff Loan Repayment". Enter the amount of the negative pay (at least) so that their payslip comes back to zero.

Then, next period, assuming that their pay is enough to cover it, enter the Staff Loan Repayment again, but this time as a negative pay amount, so that they pay you the money back.
