I started a new employee in month 8 with a P46 using 647L/M1 (leaving the Total Pay & Tax figures blank).

Her gross pay was £682.50; I deducted £28.40 PAYE (HMRC agreed)

She subsequently gave me a P45, which I sent to HMRC and have received back a P6.

I've input the following P6 details: Tax Code (647L), Total Pay (£6702.00), Total Tax (£1340.40) on both the payroll software & the HMRC CDROM for month 9 - gross pay £682.50).

Then payroll software says I should refund 28.40; The HMRC CDROM says a refund of 727.00

I've spoken to someone at HMRC, who says their calculations are correct.

Previously, there's been no diference in the calculations between the payroll software & the HMC CDROM.

Can you please help?

Did you enter the year of the P6 in 12Pay? It should be 2010. We don't have 2010 in the dropdown options in 12Pay, but you can just type it in.

If you don't enter the correct year on the P6 the software doesn't know that it should refund the previous tax, because it doesn't know if it belongs in the current tax year or not. This could be an important distinction near to the PAYE year end.
