Hi Guys,

Considering how important payroll files are, maybe it would be an idea to store 12pay payroll files somewhere other than MyDocuments.

Reason being, workers are far less likely to mistakenly delete files if they were stored in, say, the main program folder, such files in myDocs are too vulnerable dont you think?

All the best, great program, does it all in my opinion

Bill

Thanks for the kind comments.

Another interesting suggestion, Bill; variants of this suggestion come around every couple of months and we do sympathise with the point of view that you put forward even though as yet we haven't done anything about it....

You can in fact store your main data file wherever you like. MyDocuments/12Pay is just the default location. All the pdfs and convenience backups automatically stored in MyDocuments/12Pay are just there for convenience, you could delete them all as long as you keep the main .PAY file and security backups of it.

We have to balance security against convenience. We often solve, "Oh no, I've lost everything!" problems quickly over the phone because we know where the data is likely to be, and where convenience backups will be (these backups, that the system takes silently and automatically at period end save our users from their errors again and again), and it is an easy place to direct users to. If we hid the data away we'd lose that convenience. We think that the programs folder is for programs and that My Documents is for data, and in fact My Documents is usually more secure than the programs folder on a PC with multiple logins. There are other similarly secure locations such as the Application Data folder which is secured per user, but the problem with these is that it is hard to direct users to them when they need to access that folder.
