(Question entered by unidentified user, if we work out for sure who it was we'll re-attribute it...)

Trialling 12Pay after a long-time user of TAS I have stumbled across several omissions:

1. 12Pay does not allow the user to print out P14s. TAS does and I can't understand why 12Pay thinks it's not useful. I don't trust the link from the software to the HMRC site and I much prefer inputting myself online and double-checking as I go.

2. 12Pay seems to print out it's own P60s in full so that you can't seem to use the official blank template paper provided by HMRC which is much more professional as TAS can.

3. Nominal codes seem to be fixed to 12Pay's system and cannot be changed, e.g. BASIC (pay) code is greyed out.

4. No Journal Vouchers seem to be available.

5. Payslips are a bit rudimentary.

Tell me I'm wrong, or surprise me and tell me that all these features are paid-for options!

If these optrions are available, 12Pay fails for me because it does not make it easy to find out how to fix them.

Chris.

  1. We don't print out P14s. 2008/09 is the last year where they are even an option from HMRC's viewpoint. Demand for them from our users has been vanishingly small (we actually expected more requests for them and would probably have acceded particularly last year or the year before, but such requests never appeared in significant numbers); we had perhaps 5 requests in the last 2 years. P14s contain the same information as P60s if you want to enter them manually (with the exception of employer's NI, which can be read straight off the P11(NI)). It is your right to "not trust the link from the software to HMRC" and spend time keying in everything again. But the trustworthiness of that link is one of the things verified by HMRC as part of the software accreditation process and you get records in our system of what you sent and a confirmation email from HMRC when you succeed.
  2.  You think that the HMRC blanks for P60s are "much more professional." That is an opinion that we don't share. In the 3 year-ends that we've been through you're the very first person to comment negatively about this point, compared with a large number of people who've mentioned their delight that they don't have to mess about trying to get pre-printed stationery to line up in a sheet-feed printer. On a reasonable quality printer the output from 12Pay is indistinguishable from an HMRC blank at a casual glance
  3. Nominal codes are not fixed to 12Pay's system. You can alter them on the advanced tab of the payment/deduction codes.
  4. I don't know what you mean by "journal voucher" in the context of a payroll system. But perhaps you're refering to a suggested nominal ledger journal. We produce a nominal summary report, which uses the user definable nominal codes linked to the payment/deduction codes mentioned in #3. This is available in the premium edition.
  5. Most users appear to like our standard payslips, particularly the fact that they don't have to fiddle about loading special stationery in the printer hopper each week/month. They are also configurable for colour/typestyle if you purchase the premium edition and you can put your company logo on them. But not everyone likes them, as things like this are a matter of taste, so premium edition users have a choice of about 10 other styles, 6 of which print on various styles of pre-printed stationery if you prefer that.

I'm afraid we cannot compel you to like our software. Points 1 and 2 are the way it works and are unlikely to alter in the absence of significant user demand (though 1 is only relevant for the year that just finished). Points 3,4,5 would be answered by purchasing the premium edition, we believe. We wish you well whatever you decide to do, and thanks for your comments.

Well there's always one isn't there!

I have no experience of TAS, but having used many payroll packages in my working life prior to retirement, and having also put together spreadsheets for payroll, I know that 12Pay is an excellent package with superb support. I would also praise the "listening culture" which exists which gives the users a chance to contribute to improve the software even more.

I would guess that the user in question is comfortable with TAS and doesn't really want to change.

What I do know is that "pound for pound" 12Pay is the best there is!
